History and Popular Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches

One of the most important milestones in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s history was its pioneering strategy of assembling the entire watchmaking process in one location. This was not the norm in 1888 as specialists, whether movement makers, case makers, dial makers, or bracelet makers, were peppered throughout the country. As such, the company, nicknamed the Grande Maison became a true watch manufacturer, employed hundreds of workers from the region, and had a production capacity that could supply other watch brands during that time.

In 1903, Frenchman Edmond Jaeger and Jacques-David LeCoultre (the founder’s grandson) began a relationship producing a series of ultra-thin watches. The partnership proved so fruitful that an official merger happened in 1937 and Jaeger-LeCoultre was born.

The innovative Atmos clock made its debut in 1928, whereby a one-degree variation in ambient temperature is enough to power the clock’s movement for two days. Jaeger-LeCoultre continues to make Atmos clocks today.

The Reverso watch appeared in 1931, designed specifically for polo players. The watch included a clever swivel case system where players could tuck away the fragile dial and expose a hard caseback instead during dangerous matchplay. The rectangular Reverso remains one of the most famous Jaeger-LeCoultre watches for sale today, available in a multitude of options.

1950 saw the arrival of the Memovox alarm watch. The Memovox Polaris watch followed in 1968, which was a diving watch fitted with an alarm that could ring out underwater. The Polaris collection remains a mainstay of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches for sale, housing an assortment of sports watches — some even equipped with an alarm function.

The fan-favorite JLC Master Control collection was launched in 1992, a name that could only be earned after undergoing stringent “1,000 Hour Control” tests. With its 1950s design inspiration, many opt for the classic Master Control watch when looking to buy Jaeger-LeCoultre watches. There are also excellent choices within the related Master Ultra-Thin and Master Grande Tradition lineups.

Along with the above watches, other notable models to consider when buying Jaeger-LeCoultre watches include the ladies’ Rendez-Vous, the Amvox line made in collaboration with Aston Martin, the highly water-resistant Master Compressor, and the technically impressive Duometre.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Craftmanship

Jaeger-LeCoultre dubs itself as the master of complications, boasting over 430 registered patents and 1,400 unique calibers. These movements range from simple time-only ones to grand complications calibers.

In addition to the mechanics, Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are famous for their impeccable quality and appealing designs. The vertically integrated brand is also home to a large team of experts, craftsmen, and artisans who hand-assemble, hand-decorate, and hand-finish the watches. In total, 180 crafts, whether enameling, engraving, gem-setting, polishing, beveling and so on, are done under one roof at the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacturer.
